Key Parts Ways With TV Programs After ‘Injection Aunt’ Controversy, Apologizes for “Ignorance”

SHINee’s Key has issued a public apology and announced his withdrawal from ongoing television programs following controversy over his association with the so-called “Injection Aunt,” a figure at the center of an illegal medical practice scandal that also involves comedian Park Na-rae.

On December 17, SM Entertainment released an official statement on Key’s behalf, first apologizing for the delay in responding to the issue. “We sincerely apologize for not issuing a prompt statement due to the need for internal coordination regarding schedules,” the agency said.

According to the statement, Key was introduced to an individual identified only as “Lee” through a recommendation from an acquaintance and initially believed Lee to be a licensed physician working at a hospital in Gangnam, Seoul. “Key received medical treatment at the hospital on multiple occasions,” the agency explained, adding that when visiting the hospital became difficult, Key received treatment at home several times.

“At the time, Key believed Lee to be a doctor and was not informed otherwise,” SM Entertainment said. “He did not recognize that receiving treatment at home could be problematic under those circumstances.”

The agency continued, “Key recently became aware for the first time of allegations surrounding Lee’s medical license and is experiencing significant confusion. He is deeply reflecting on his own ignorance in this matter.”

In light of the seriousness of the controversy, SM Entertainment announced that Key has decided to step down from all scheduled activities and programs in which he is currently appearing. “Once again, we sincerely apologize to fans and the public for causing concern,” the statement concluded.

Key’s response has drawn comparisons to Park Na-rae, who released a video statement the previous day amid similar allegations. Park, who has faced accusations ranging from mistreatment of staff to illegal medical procedures involving the same individual, did not issue a direct apology or detailed explanation, instead stating that legal proceedings are underway and that she would make no further statements on the matter.

Critics have argued that Park’s response was inappropriate given the gravity of the allegations against her as a public figure.

In contrast, Key’s decision to acknowledge the controversy, issue an apology, and withdraw from programs has been viewed as a markedly different approach. As public attention remains focused on the unfolding scandal, further developments are being closely watched.
